Background

Fish market in greater Dinajpur (Northern Bangladesh) was characterized with more downsides than other strong markets in North Bengal as Bogra and Natore. The sub sector study found several constraints to work for. Besides, there were some opportunities to avail like strong local demand and export possibility (national market) enables introduction of various new fish species and promotion of fish culture in rice field in perennial and low land areas.

Intervention Areas

1. Improving productivity through improved knowledge of farmers (training of hatchery, nursery, fingerling traders, medicine & feed sellers)
2. Improving access to quality inputs through availability in local market
3. Establish brood bank for regular supply of quality brood fish.
4. Formation and strengthening the capacity of the local associations to take more initiatives for the development of the sub sector.
5. Introducing new species (Tilapia, Pungush) of fish.
6. Promoting rice-fish culture.
7. Introducing and promoting new fish cultivation technologies.
8. Advocacy for grass root level associations (GLA-Motshojibi) for accessing to open water bodies.
9. Capacity building of women on fish cultivation by utilizing small ponds and ditches.
Result/Impact:  
  Production increased: per decimal 7kg (12 kg to 19 kg).
  Income increased: 18 thousand farmers were benefited from the project (additional income of BDT 25200 for a farmer in a season for 30-40 decimal of pond).
  Worked with 6 National inputs companies.
  Private sectors provided services regularly.
  200 Nursery are capacitated through input companies.
  500 fingerlings traders are capacitated through input companies and nursery owners.
  21 Hatcheries are capacitated through experts.
  Introduced new species (Tilapia, Pungush) through input companies and hatcheries.
  Rice Fish culture technology is commonly practiced in this region.
  Quality fingerlings were available in the market.
  Mortality rate decreases to 3% from 25% at all level(hatchery, nursery and fingerling traders) level.
  Copying: Other farmers started practicing fish cultivation by seeing the benefits of it.
