Background

The culture of fish has been developed in last two decades through introduction of exotic high growth species, increased commercial orientation, improved cultivation technique and management, and enhanced capacity of market players. This development has been translated into the improvement of livelihoods of vast poor associated with this sector through increase in income. The key factors of this project were facilitating service market actors to make efficient fish value chain that works in favor of poor farmers who are subsequently outnumbered the rich category in the targeting working area.

Intervention Areas

1. Improving productivity through improved knowledge of farmers ( training of hatchery , nursery, fingerling traders, medicine & feed sellers)
2. Improving access to quality inputs through availability in local market
3. Establish brood bank for regular supply of quality brood fish.
4. Formation and strengthening the capacity of the local associations to take more initiatives for the development of the sub sector.
5. Introducing new species (Tilapia , Koi) of fish.
6. Promoting rice-fish culture.
7. Introducing and promoting new fish cultivation technologies.
8. Advocacy for grass root level associations (GLA-Motshojibi) for accessing to open water bodies.
9. Capacity building of women on fish cultivation by utilizing small ponds and ditches.
Result/ Impact:  
  Production increased: per decimal 7 kg (12 kg to 19 kg)
  Income increased: 30 Thousand farmers benefits from the project(additional income of BDT 17500 for a farmer in a season for 30-40 decimal of pond)
  Partnering with 7 national level private inputs companies for making quality inputs and services available at farmers’ level.
  Private sectors provided services regularly
  Establish and strengthen 5 district level Fishery Association.
  300 grass root level Motshojibi benefited by accessing to open water bodies (Additional of BDT 9700 for a Moshtojibi in a season).
  Established 25 Private Brood Banks
  Different type of quality Fingerlings available in the markets
  300 Nursery are capacitated through input companies.
  1000 fingerlings traders are capacitated through input companies and nursery owners
  40 Hatcheries are capacitated through experts.
  95 fish input sellers are capacitated through input companies
  Introduced new species (Tilapia) through input companies and hatcheries
  Rice Fish culture technology is commonly practiced in this region
  Quality fingerling were available in the markets
  Mortality rate decreases to 3% from 25% at all level (hatchery, nursery and fingerling traders) level
  Crowding in: 4 new fish input companies started business in the locality to capture the market opportunity.
  Copying: Other farmers started practicing fish cultivation by seeing the benefits of it.
