Background Vegetable is one of the major agricultural sectors in Bangladesh. It has a total production of 1.5 million MT, which is very lower compared to an estimated demand of 3.5 million MT. This demand-supply gap is likely to expand with the increase of both the population and per capita income. Productivity for vegetables is 2.85 MT/acre which is significantly lower than other countries. The major constraints that hinder the growth of this sector are- farmers’ poor knowledge about quality seeds, seed farming techniques, post-production processing and preservation, appropriate dose of fertilizers (both chemical and compost), micronutrients & pesticides and its benefits, profitable crop cycle, cropping pattern and soil content and last but not the least, insufficient supply of quality compost. With a vision to increase the sector’s overall competitiveness by increasing productivity and increasing market access for the farmers, GMark is working on various intervention activities following Market Development Approach (MDA).
Intervention Areas In the Vegetable Market Development project, GMark is facilitating the following interventions throughout the country.
