Background

Oxfam GB has been implementing Chili Traders’ Enterprise of Fulchari at Gaibandha District in Bangladesh under the Enterprise Development Program since 2013. In 2013, enterprise struggled with their dry chili due to shortage of supply, lower quality but higher market price because of late flood occurred in October, 2012 in the area. So, to meet the national demand, the processing companies had to depend on Indian chili. Now the companies are showing interest and dependency on Indian chili due to i) it’s hotness and color, ii) availability in market and iii) lower market price. As a result, the chili farmers of Bangladesh are now in threat position and local market actors lose their interest to do their chili business.

Deeming the situation as a national risk, Oxfam Bangladesh wants to organize a national level round table dialogue workshop with all stakeholders to exchange their opinions and views on dry chili business situation and draw a positive way forward against the prevailing constraint distressing the grass root Bangladeshi farmers.

Specific objective are:

Review national market demand for dry chili production and sales in terms of variety, quality and availability;
Identify trade policy (export-import) related constraints that affects small and marginal chili farmers;
Identify specific variety (from research bank) that has higher market demand and identify scopes to promote such variety.
