Background

Based on the poverty situation in the coastal areas and the opportunity to work with the Sundarbans Dependant Extreme Poor Households (SDEPHs), Concern Worldwide has launched the SUNDARI project since January 2012. The project is supported by European Commission’s under the Sundarbans Environmental and Livelihoods Security (SEALS) Project framework which is implemented by the Forest Department. The focus of the SUNDARI project is to engage with the forest users’ to promote the Co-Management practices of the Sundarbans Reserve Forest (SRF) resources to ensure the sustainability of SRF resources with alternative livelihood support and promote biodiversity conservation.

Objective

The overall objective of the study is to assess the existing and potential market of the Sundarbans forest products collected by the target group along with value chain for a fair operating of market conditions for those products ensuring the conservation of sundarbans biodiversity and sustainability.

Tasks

The study analyzed following issues of the project:

Economies of scale for a scoping of alternative climate adaptive livelihoods
Capacity of utilization and scale up opportunities
Interrelationships among business units including vertical integration
Geographic locations; institutional factors (regulations; taxes etc.)
Marketing outlets and potential for linkages with private sector
